Data Update 2: What Have Been So Far?
1. The Lead:
Up to 30% of the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada rate their mental health as below par, compared to 9% of non-2SLGBTQ+ people, according to Statistics Canada.
2. The Excel Workbook
3. Explanation:
The workbook contains two sheets, which are Raw Data and Slice. In Slice, there are 3 columns and 5 rows. The spreadsheet showcases the proportions of 2SLGBTQ+ people and non-2SLGBTQ+ people who evaluate their mental health according to 2 levels: good, very good, or excellent (good and above par), and fair or poor (below par). The values are proportions shown in percentage. They are calculated within the population of either demographic group. For example, 70.3% of the 2SLGBTQ+ community across Canada perceive their mental health as good, very good, or excellent, and the rest of them (29.7%) rate their mental health as fair or poor.
I chose to find the answer to this question because the feedback from Update 1 showed me how looking at data across Canada would be more effective. Eventually, I found a much more interesting data point where the percentage difference is significant enough to make a headline.
4. The Dataset

Hi Leslie! Your dataset looks so clear and easy to read. I also really like the dataset you've chosen. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie, love how organized your update is! Your lead is really good as well as your detailed explanation of the dataset. I also really liked at the end how you included the thought process from your feedback in update 1, good touch. Overall, amazing job!
ReplyDeleteHey Leslie, you have make a presentation about community mental health inclusivity and targeted concerns, which highlights the level of inclusion within the 2SLGBTQ+ community. I appreciate that you pointed out the disparities in mental health assessments between 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and non-2SLGBTQ+ individuals. Additionally, the slice you made are very good; the comparison of just two data points effectively highlights an important social issue and allows for an understanding of the status and self-identification of the 2SLGBTQ+ in society. My suggestion is to add in the Explanation potential reasons for the mental health gap, or a comparison of social support data, which could further investigate the data related to the potential issues.
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie, I think looking at data across Canada was a good choice! I like the fact that you included the disparity in percentages for 2SLGBTQ+ and non-2SLGBTQ+ people in your lead. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie, I like how easy to read your data slice is. Its clear and concise. There is a large gap between the happiness of the LGBTQ+ community, and the non-LGBTQ+ community unfortunatel, hope this will change in time with acceptance and growth.
ReplyDeleteYour lede is very concise. Your excel spreadsheets are also very good, and they're very rich and they're very clear about what you're doing.
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie, I think your dataset is amazing as it is so clear and easy to understand. I love how you include the comment from the previous assignment here as a closing.
ReplyDeleteYour lead is fantastic, and your raw data and slice back your claim up: well done! I really appreciate how you have incorporated feedback into how you analysis and present your data, being flexible and able to adapt as needed is a great way to be true to the data and research you are conducting. It adds credibility to your work. Perhaps reconsidering the name of your column that contains the different mental health ratings would improve your slice (but check with Chad first, I may be way off base). My thinking is that although these four specific categories of mental health levels are taken from the "socioeconomic demographic" column in the wider data, isolated from the rest of the data, that title no longer really makes sense. Something as simple as "Mental Health" will align the header/title better with the data in your slice.
ReplyDeleteHi, you've provided a very clear lead and explanation of your data, which gives it the feel of a professional data report. You not only highlight the significant mental health challenges faced by the 2SLGBTQ+ community but also subtly hint at the need for supportive policies, targeted mental health services, and broader societal changes to enhance the well-being of the 2SLGBTQ+ population.
